Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, a Hartford, Connecticut law firm, is in search of a self-directed and experienced Controller to oversee all financial and accounting functions and assist with human resources activities. The successful candidate will be responsible for budget management, financial analysis, payroll, forecasting, billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable and financial reporting. Areas within the human resources department will also be managed by the Controller, including policy and procedure compliance. This is a fantastic opportunity for a professional who thrives in a busy work place, and is well-versed in working closely with senior management. 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Participate in the development of and support the company’s strategic plans
  • Monitor the financial performance of the company
  • Compile and analyze financial reporting packages
  • Leverage the full functionality of the firm’s financial management system software
  • Prepare and distribute monthly and annual operating budgets and financial reports
  • Prepare annual reporting and coordinate completion of annual financial statements with the firm’s accountants
  • Develop and manage financial controls in accordance with the company’s procedures
  • Communicate financial metrics to senior management
  • Provide leadership and support to accounts receivable, accounts payable and billing departments
  • Manage the preparation of payroll for personnel
  • Supervise and train accounting and financial staff
  • Keep up-to-date on current payroll, HR and tax trends

Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years accounting experience in a senior accounting or financial management role
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Impeccable analytical and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated and self-directed
  • Ability to work closely with the senior management team, accounting and billing staff and outside financial consultants and vendors

Accounting Manager/Assistant Controller:

Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, a Hartford, Connecticut law firm with five offices, is in search of an Accounting Manager/Assistant Controller.

Areas within the Accounting and Billing department will be managed by the Accounting Manager/Assistant Controller. This is a fantastic opportunity for a professional who thrives in a busy work place, and is well-versed in accounting and working closely with management and staff.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide onsite supervision and mentoring for the accounting and billing staff
  • Manage Billing, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable and Escrow accounts
  • Assist with Payroll processing
  • Serve as day-to-day accounting department contact for attorneys, staff and vendors
  • Assist attorneys in researching and resolving billing issues as they arise
  • Provide support for the annual budget process
  • Assist with forecasting and analysis of various expenses
  • Assist with annual and monthly general ledger budget management of accounts by office and practice group
  • Assist with bank account and general ledger account reconciliations
  • Assist with preparation of schedules for annual Firm financial statement review by CPA firm
  • Prepare, process and generate routine and special reports for distribution as needed
  • Ensure consistent application of Firm policies and procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned or as indicated by the work


  • Ability to handle highly confidential information
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work independently to meet deadlines
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting preferred
  • Ability to recognize, research and resolve complex billing and A/P issues
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Courteous interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with and follow oral and written instructions from clients, firm members and vendors
  • Strong problem-solving and reasoning skills, mathematical competence with attention to detail
  • Proficiency in MS Office programs, advanced Excel experience and skills
  • Flexibility to work overtime as needed
  • Experience with Rippe & Kingston LMS or similar enterprise software a plus
  • Experience in law firm accounting a plus
