In 1967, we became the first major Connecticut law firm to establish a legislative and public affairs practice. Taking an innovative approach, we unite the legal, political and public affairs disciplines to provide our clients with strong and effective representation before state and local governments. The principles on which we built our practice are thoughtful evaluation of client needs, expert design of strategies, and advocacy put forth in an effective and coordinated manner. We distinguish ourselves through our depth of knowledge, our sense of how government operates, and our commitment to our clients.
With the resources of a full service law firm, we are able to achieve success for our clients in the legislative and political processes. As part of the law firm, we are able to draw upon the experience of attorneys from other practice groups, including bankruptcy, communications, corporate, environmental, labor and employment, health care, intellectual property, real estate, and tax, that may have substantive experience with the issues before the legislature or agency.
By design, we represent targeted industries including healthcare, insurance, utilities, higher education, manufacturing and alcoholic beverages. We have special expertise in the public affairs aspects of large scale real estate development projects, particularly with regard to obtaining financial assistance, tax incentives and bonding for highways and infrastructure. We also supplement the firm’s substantive practice groups in connection with complex corporate and business matters, including mergers, acquisitions and other transactions involving regulated industries requiring governmental approvals.
As the regulation of the political process has increased, businesses face a greater challenge in order to protect their reputations and good will through careful compliance with difficult and sometimes contradictory lobbying, ethics and campaign finance laws. As a law firm, we place a special emphasis on this aspect of our representation. We make our clients aware of their obligations under applicable law upon the inception of and throughout our relationship. We are frequently retained as special counsel to remedy ethics and campaign finance violations. Finally, as a law firm, we are subject to the rules of professional ethics regarding client loyalty and confidentiality and we will not advocate or represent interests that are adverse to our clients.
