Daniel B. Fitzgerald served as a panelist at The Arts, Entertainment and Sports Law Society (AESLS)/Office of Career Services Entertainment Law Panel at the University of Connecticut School of Law on February 6, 2008. The event was open to all law students who are interested in a career in entertainment law.  In addition to Mr. Fitzgerald, Joan Channick, Managing Director of Long Wharf Theater, Jeff Googel, Talent Agent, of the William Morris Agency and James Walker, Managing Partner, Walker and Associates, volunteered to serve as panelists for this event.

Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C. Serves as Underwriter's Counsel in Historic State of Connecticut Bond Sale and Closing
Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C. served as underwriter's counsel in the historic sale and closing of the State of Connecticut's Taxable General Obligation Bonds in an amount in excess of $2.27 billion.  The bond issue, which closed on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, was the single largest bond issue by the State of Connecticut in its history.  Firm attorneys James H. Lloyd, III and Michael P. Botelho represented the underwriting group, led by senior managers Bear Stearns & Co., Inc., J.P. Morgan Securities, Inc. and Merrill Lynch & Co.   The proceeds from the State's bonds were used to provide monies for the Connecticut Teachers' Retirement Fund to fund capitalized interest and to pay costs of issuance.  The bonds were sold to both domestic and international purchasers.

Gugliotti spoke at the National Business Institute Continuing Education on "Real Estate Law:  Advanced Issues and Answers".  Attorney Mark Zimmermann addressed how to strike a balance between environmental responsibility and property development in real estate transactions.  Attorney Thomas Gugliotti discussed how to advise clients on their rights and obligations when transactions are affected by bankruptcy.

Michael P. Botelho, State Public Affairs Chairman for the Connecticut Chapter of the March of Dimes, attended the March of Dimes 2007 National Public Affairs Conference in Washington , D.C. on October 18 and 19, 2007.  Mr. Botelho was part of the Connecticut delegation speaking to legislative officials on Capitol Hill regarding maternal and child health issues.  Some of the topics discussed at these congressional visits were reauthorization of the State of Connecticut ’s Children’s Health Insurance Program, funding for the PREEMIE Act, and newborn screening legislation.

Botelho, Public Affairs Chair for the Connecticut Chapter of the March of Dimes,  will be speaking about March of Dime's mission, the issue of prematurity, and Prematurity Awareness Month on 19 radio stations statewide on Sunday, October 28, 2007.  The following Connecticut Network stations will be running the "Diaglogue 2007" interview with Mr. Botelho:   Bridgeport: WEBE-FM; Danbury: WRKI-FM, WLAD-AM, WDAQ-FM, WREF-AM; Hartford: WKSS-FM, WWYZ-FM, WRCH-FM, WZMX-FM; New Haven: WELI-AM, WKCI-FM, WYBC-AM; Norwalk: WNLK-AM, WEFX-FM; Norwich: WICH-AM,WCTY-FM; Stamford: WSTC-AM, WCTZ-FM; Willimantic: WILI-AM.   The air time for the half hour interview on each station has not yet been determined.  We will post the scheduled times once received.

Van Valkenburg, an associate in the Firm's Litigation Department and an Army Reserve Judge Advocate General (JAG) Officer, recently graduated from the 158th Contract Attorneys Course at the Judge Advocate Legal Center and School in Charlottesville , Virginia . The Contract Attorneys Course is attended by contract attorneys from the various federal agencies which comprise the Executive Branch, both military and civilian. The course provides its graduates with an understanding of all aspects of federal government contracting from formation through administration and covers bid protests as well as contract disputes.

Peter Kelly Elected Chairman of The Greater Hartford Arts Council
Peter G. Kelly, Senior Principal, was elected Chairman of The Greater Hartford Arts Council in July 2006. The Arts Council is in its 37th year. It serves as advocate of the arts, a center for arts related fundraising and serves over 150 arts agencies with grants and assistance in excess of $6,000,000 each year. Mr. Kelly served as Chairman of the United Arts Appeal in 2005 and was among the founding directors.
